A Parent's Guide to Teen Orthodontics

When to start, what to expect, and how to make treatment work alongside school, sports, and social life.

A Parent's Guide to Teen Orthodontics

The teen years are the most common time for orthodontic treatment — and for good reason. Most permanent teeth are in, the jaw is still growing, and you have a real window to set up a lifetime of good oral health. But the teen years are also the busiest years of your child's life. Here's how to make it work.

When to start

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7. That doesn't mean treatment starts then — usually, it means the orthodontist makes a plan and decides if/when to begin.

Most teen treatment begins between ages 11–14, but every case is different.

What to expect

Treatment with braces or clear aligners typically takes 18–24 months. During that time, your teen will:

  • Have brief check-ins every 6–8 weeks
  • Need to be more diligent about brushing and flossing
  • Avoid certain foods (with braces) or wear aligners 22–24 hours per day (with clear aligners)
  • Possibly need rubber bands or other supplementary appliances

Making it work with sports

Most teens continue all sports throughout treatment. We provide custom mouthguards that fit comfortably over braces, and clear aligners are easy to remove for contact sports.

If your teen plays a wind instrument, there's usually a brief 1–2 week adjustment period at the start of braces treatment, then it's business as usual.

The cost question

Insurance often covers a portion of orthodontic treatment for teens. We're in-network with most major carriers. The total out-of-pocket for most families is similar whether they choose braces or clear aligners.

What teens say

The teens we treat almost universally say one thing once treatment is done: "I wish I hadn't been nervous." Modern orthodontics is more comfortable, faster, and more discreet than ever. And the result — a smile they're proud of, for life — is well worth it.
