Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces — Which Is Right for You?

A clear-eyed comparison of the two most popular orthodontic treatments — including cost, treatment time, and who each option is best for.

Clear Aligners vs. Traditional Braces — Which Is Right for You?

It's the question we hear most often: should I go with traditional braces or clear aligners? Both are excellent treatments — the right choice depends on your case, your lifestyle, and your goals.

The short answer

  • Choose braces if you have a complex bite issue, want the lowest cost, or worry about compliance.
  • Choose clear aligners if you want a discreet, removable option and have a mild-to-moderate case.

How they compare

Appearance

Braces are visible. Modern brackets are smaller than they were 20 years ago, and ceramic ("clear") brackets blend in much better than metal — but they're still noticeable.

Clear aligners are nearly invisible in everyday life. Most people won't know you're wearing them unless you tell them.

Treatment time

For comparable cases, treatment times are similar — usually 12–24 months. Complex cases sometimes resolve faster with braces because the orthodontist has more precise control over individual teeth.

Cost

Cost varies by case, but clear aligners and braces are typically priced within a few hundred dollars of each other. Insurance treats them the same way in most plans.

Daily life

  • Braces are on 24/7. No compliance required, but you'll need to avoid certain foods (popcorn kernels, hard candy, gum).
  • Clear aligners are removable. You can eat anything — but you need to wear the aligners 22–24 hours per day and remember to put them back in.

Maintenance

Braces require slightly more careful brushing and flossing around brackets. Clear aligners require cleaning the trays and brushing after every meal before reinserting.

How to decide

The honest answer: come in for a complimentary consultation. We'll do a quick exam and tell you what the orthodontist would recommend — and why. There's no pressure to start same-day, and we'll send you home with a clear written plan.

Both treatments produce beautiful results when they're the right fit. The job of a good orthodontist is to help you figure out which is right for you.
