During this visit we will perform a preliminary
examination and recommend to you a tentative treatment plan.
Length of treatment and an approximate estimate of the cost
will also be presented to you.
2
Diagnostic Records
If you decide to undergo treatment, full diagnostic records
may be taken at the same visit, if possible, or another appointment
will be made at a later date. Diagnostic records usually include
study models (moulds of your teeth), x-rays and photographs
of your face and teeth. The record will be carefully analyzed
to arrive at a definite treatment plan.
3
Case Presentation
At this appointment we will present to you a complete appraisal
of your problem, a treatment plan, as well as a finalized
treatment fee and payment term. (After appointments 2 and
3, you may have to return to your dentist for removal of teeth,
or a dental checkup and cleaning if you have not had one for
over six months)
4
Active Treatment
Before treatment begins, you must have had a recent check-up
with your dentist. All basic treatment required (cleaning,
fillings, etc.) should be completed. At this stage, active
orthodontic appliance will be placed in your mouth. You will
receive specific instructions regarding the care of your teeth
and braces. Regular adjustment of the appliance (varying from
3 to 6 weeks) at our office is required throughout the treatment
period. It is also important that you maintain regular check-up
visits with your family dentist during that period of time.
5
Retention
At the completion of the active phase of your orthodontic
treatment, the braces will be removed and you will be given
retainers. Your teeth must be held in their new positions
until the bone and ligament surrounding the roots of the teeth,
the gums, the tongue and the lips have adapted themselves
to the new positions of the teeth. If retention is inadequate,
relapse will occur. The period of retention varies with the
individual. Periodic recall check-ups will be required. A
set of records including study models, x-rays and photographs,
will be taken at the time the braces are removed. The records
serve as a reference point to monitor the stability of the
dentition in the future.
