Brushing and Flossing Teeth While Wearing Braces

  • Use a soft toothbrush.

  • With a small circular movement, gently clean the teeth between the braces and the gum.

  • Do not press hard, keeping the bristles straight at all time. Use the tip of the bristles to dislodge the plague.

  • Brush all teeth systematically

Common mistakes in brushing

  • Press too hard. Remember to use the tip of the bristles with a gentle circular motion.

  • Try to scrub too many teeth. Keep toothbrush at one spot and clean 2 to 3 teeth at a time. Remember not to scrub, but clean with a gentle circular motion.

  • Brush teeth in random. You end up cleaning the easily reached areas and ignore the difficult areas. Clean systematically. Pay special attention to the difficulty areas, such as the last tooth at the back, especially the upper right and left last molar (to allow room for your toothbrush, shift your lower jaw towards the side you want to reach).

Same procedures for the lower teeth.

  • Pass the floss behind the wire.

  • Gently clean sides of the tooth with an up and down motion. Make sure you pass the floss below the gum level.

Fixed Expansion Appliance

Your expansion appliance is now attached to your teeth with cement. It cannot be removed. Don't try. It is painful and you will cause damage to your teeth.

The purpose of the expansion appliance is to gain space by widening your upper jaw. Treatment will take approximately 8 weeks.

At the beginning you will feel:

1. Some general discomfort.
2. Increase of salivary flow.
3. Lisping while you talk.

Persevere! Within a week, all symptoms will subside.

Remember:

  • Food will be trapped around the appliance. Make sure you rinse well after eating.
  • Carefully brush around the appliance. Water-pick is a very helpful adjunct.
  • Do not try to remove the appliance. It may cause damage to your teeth.
  • If the appliance came loose, sit the appliance back on and contact us immediately.

Removable Expansion Appliance

The appliance is made to be removable for your convenience in eating and brushing. The key to success is wearing it, not removing it.

At the beginning you will feel:

1. Some general discomfort.
2. Increase of salivary flow.
3. Lisping while you talk.

Persevere! Within a week, all symptoms will subside

Retainers

Finally the braces are gone! You are finished! Free at last, right?

Well, not quite. The active treatment is over. There is one more step called retention.

Your retainers are designed to guide your teeth as they settle into a natural functional bite. You must wear the retainers exactly as you have instructed; otherwise your teeth may relapse back to their original crooked position and all the benefits of wearing braces will be lost.
